Happy Monday, guys! Holiday season is fast approaching, so are endless occasions to wear our favourite dresses. While it can be relatively easy to find a nice-fitting dress and a pair of coordinating shoes, choosing the right piece of outerwear to complete your party look can be quite a challenge – especially if you happen to live in a cold climate like myself. You can’t imagine how many times I wondered if I should just throw my warmest parka on and sacrifice style for comfort, but at some point I realized that it’s all about the right silhouette and length. So, let me give you a few simple tips on how to wear a jacket over dress, and look confident when you arrive at a party, date or a work meeting.
Short jackets, such as leather jackets, cropped denim jackets or tailored jackets that hit on or above your waistline work amazingly with any kind of dress, unless it’s a gown, obviously. These choices are totally foolproof, so weather permitting, I’d choose one of the above every time. Check out below how I am wearing one of my favourite black dresses under a leather jacket.
Knee-length wool and trench coats
Knee-length coats are a bit trickier to style. As a rule of thumb, your dress shouldn’t be longer than your coat and ideally, these two pieces should match in style. For example, a minimalist shift dress will look amazing under a longer menswear-inspired wool coat. A fitted cocktail dress will look great under a classic masculine coat hitting at knee length.
A-line, fit & flare coats
These are perfect for ruffle, skater and other playful dresses – they will match the girly vibe and, unlike shorter jackets, they will keep you warm during colder months. Plus, you won’t have to worry about your dress or skirt getting wrinkled under your coat.
